The Marvels

An ancient bracelet is found by the new Supremor Dar-Benn of the Kree aliens, who intends to use it to save their planet Hala, devastated by a civil war. The discovery also causes a gap in space which Monica Rambeau, on behalf of SABER, the space division directed by Nick Fury, goes to examine with her own powers. So does Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, on the other side of the galaxy. The two, both equipped with abilities connected to the electromagnetic spectrum and light, discover that their powers have “intertwined” with those of the young Kamala Khan, alias Miss Marvel, who not coincidentally is equipped with an ancient bracelet with mysterious origins.. .
A purely comedic gimmick forces the three superheroines of The Marvels to collaborate, but the tone is more suited to an adventure of the television Miss Marvel than to the epic of the Avengers, who made the fortune of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The film, which also resolves some pending plots, will especially appeal to fans of the Ms. Marvel series, both for the role of Kamala and the recovery of her family, and for a singing and dancing moment with colorful costumes that recalls Bollywood. Monica continues to be a character linked to the stories of others rather than at the center of her own story and her being disappointed by her “aunt” Carol, because she disappeared from her life, is a conflict that vanishes when faced with a threat to her Earth and perhaps the entire universe.
If it is true that in comics the stories of Marvel superheroes have always had pink elements, almost like a soap opera, according to one of Stan Lee’s best intuitions, in the cinema this type of emotional obstacles work less, especially in a blockbuster, even if it is as light as This. Furthermore, the lightness is on the one hand the film’s merit, but on the other it is its fault, because it arrives at the wrong time, when after various films, perhaps even entertaining ones, a supporting engine in the Marvel Universe titles has been missing – which in fact they are starting to struggle at the box office.
It is certainly not the villain of this film who can raise the stakes and if the twist of Thanos’ snap of his fingers remains unique, at least a threatening figure would be necessary at this point. And this is all the more urgent considering the recent failure of Ant-Man: Quantumania with Kang and the problems that actor Jonathan Majors is experiencing. The most relevant and probably most appreciated things by The Marvels fans are offered at the end, in the epilogue and in the usual scene during the end credits. However, they will not be enough to save the film, which seems like yet another chapter in a series that can easily be seen on the home screen – something that the films released during Covid and the Marvel-Disney Studios series have also accustomed us to. In short, who is the cause of his evil… but to get out of this stalemate we need a title capable of presenting itself as an event and not as the big screen debut of two characters born on TV.
